Gang activity has become a fact of life in the school environment, even in suburban areas and small towns. To help teachers recognize and understand gang behavior, the Enhancement Course Program, sponsored by Loyola Marymount University, has assembled this brief directory of common gang signs and graffiti. The guide presented here is not comprehensive; there are literally thousands of different gangs in the United States, each with different symbols and traditions. Los Angeles and Chicago gang graffiti are the two dominant styles, however, and most gang graffiti seen throughout the U.S. is influenced by one or both of these styles to some degree.
